Eddie Murphy - will he be the host of the 2012 Oscars?
Eddie Murphy

According to sources close to the show, Eddie Murphy is in the cards for hosting the 84th edition of the Oscars, in 2012. Although no official decision has been made, the actor seems to be the favorite to do the honors for the February broadcast.

Eddie Murphy could rceive the good news as early as this week, as producers Don Mischer and Brett Ratner will meet with Tom Sherak ( Academy of Motion Pictures President). Apparently, Murphy has shown a real interest in the job and everything seems to be in his favor. It is considered that the comedian's presence on the Oscars stage will attract a 'younger, more diverse audience who normally would have no interest in the Oscars.'

Murphy's stage presence and his constant interaction with the audience are some of the qualities that make him the no 1 choice. 'Nobody knows movies better or is a bigger cinephile than Eddie. Not Brett. Not even Quentin Tarantino. Eddie can quote scenes from every single movies word for word', an insider says. 'He can bring all that experience to hosting. Plus he has Saturday Night Live experience before a live crowd. And worldwide the biggest crossover comedians are Will Smith and Eddie Murphy.'

Besides Eddie Murphy, other names being cited for the jos are Jerry Seinfeld and Billy Crystal.
